Okay, we’ll admit it, job hunting can sometimes be daunting. But if you’re after a new career or the next step up the ladder then it’s got to be done, and it certainly requires a fair amount of thought. After all, we spend on average 40% of our waking year at work. Shaking off those nerves, shifting your focus and tailoring your approach can do you a world of good. But above all else, finding the right role for you is the most important thing. So how can you ensure that you nab the perfect job? We’ve come up with a few pointers to pave your way to success – read up and take note

Recruitment, Advice

Know yourself.

Take a good hard look at your skills, your values and your preferences. Ask yourself, what skills do you enjoy using? What environment do you prefer? Take a moment to picture your ideal role and jot it all down, then use this to help guide your search. If a role matches the majority of your points, it should give you a good idea of whether it’s the right role for you.

Don’t sit in a box.

Focus on the ingredients, not the title. Its great to have a specific career ambition in mind but don’t let yourself get blindsided. You’d be surprised how many roles actually fit your values and expectations, so don’t narrow your options based on job title alone and be sure to embrace unexpected opportunities. After all, you might even find your calling.

Get in the know.

Don’t rely on the job advert alone. Job boards may allow you to apply with just the click of a button, but if you’re not taking the time to delve deeper into the role and the company, you’re definitely not getting the full picture. Do your research and match the job spec and culture with your own preferences so that you can make an informed decision before applying.

Paint a true picture.

So you’ve shortlisted your ideal jobs, now it’s your time to shine! Use your application to really showcase who you are and what you do. Remember, this may well be your perfect role, so maximise your strengths and show yourself in your best light.

Create Adapt LinkedIn Page

Be a keen bean.

A little food for thought: proactive research will go a long way. With your job wish-list to hand, you’ve got the employment world at your fingertips. Can’t find any roles open to you now? Start looking into ideal companies that match your values and culture and get connected. Follow employees on LinkedIn and introduce yourself. They might have the perfect role for you, and if not, when they are hiring you can jump on board.

Ultimately, as ominous as it may seem, finding the right role for you doesn’t have to be a minefield. Think of it as a challenge and keep it authentic. But remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will the perfect career. A little patience and perseverance will go a long way. Do you have any job hunting tips you’d like to share?
